After graduation, he joined the United States Air Force Judge Advocate General Corps where he served for 11 years. CJ defended detainees at Naval Station Guantanamo Bay, Cuba charged with terrorism, he represented over 50 victims of sexual violence, he served as prosecution and defense counsel, and represented over 200 clients in their military disability cases. CJ still practices as a Lieutenant Colonel in his reserve capacity.
After over a decade, CJ decided to move home once more to be closer to, and practice with, Mark, Libby, and Tatyana. He believes this team to be as strong as those he was with in the military. When he is not arguing with his Mother, you’ll be able to find him on the golf course, out with friends, at the gym, or pretending he’s a general contractor.
Libby Grotewohl is an associate attorney at the Law Offices of Mark Grotewohl. Growing up watching her father, Mark, develop his legal practice, Libby quickly discovered her passion for the law and advocating for others.
After graduating from St. Francis High School in Sacramento, she attended Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska. She then returned to her hometown to attend the University of the Pacific, McGeorge School of Law where she served as Editor-in-Chief of Volume 50 of The University of the Pacific Law Review. While in law school she completed clerkships with the California Attorney General, Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office, and the U.S. Attorney for the District of Nebraska.
Libby’s current practice is limited exclusively to family law.
Mark limits his practice exclusively to family law and has represented hundreds of clients in all areas of family practice, ranging from the most straightforward disputes over child custody and support to those involving complex issues of community property valuation and characterization. Since March, 2021, Mark has been designated as a Certified Family Law Specialist by the California Bar Board of Legal Specialization. Regardless of the issue, Mark considers the unique facts and circumstances of each case to identify the most effective strategy for resolution. While a negotiated settlement is the best approach in many cases, others require a trial of the disputed issues to achieve a complete resolution. Mark is adept in using either, or a combination of both, to achieve the best outcome for his clients.
Between 1999 and 2009, Mark was a partner in a San Francisco based real estate investment firm. He attributes his effectiveness as a family lawyer in large part to the analytical and negotiation skills he employed on a daily basis managing a real estate portfolio with a value in excess of $25 million.
Mark earned his bachelor’s degree at the University California, Berkeley and Masters in Business Administration at Pepperdine University. He earned his JD from Lincoln Law School in Sacramento, CA.
Mark and his wife Elizabeth have been married for over 40 years and have four children. When not practicing law, Mark is likely to be found either on the golf course or sailing a boat on the San Francisco Bay.
